REACTIONS TO FAILURE

Failing students may react in a number of ways:

  • Feel betrayed and hurt as their ‘friend’ has failed them. Developing a professional, supportive role rather than a ‘close’ friendship role is crucial
  • Respond with dis-belief
    • possibly due to an inaccurate self assessment
    • previous mentor giving the student the benefit of the doubt
  • Display a range of emotions (such as anger or crying) and claim victimisation
  • Blame others for their deficits such as ‘lack of appropriate placements’, ‘previous mentors’
